404 page with paint layout

Hi

Is it possible to stop a 404 page displaying with a paint layout? I'll give you an example:

We have news articles in a folder and each of them display in the same way with a font size selector, 'email this to a friend' etc at top and bottom of the article contents, so this generic content is in a paint layout applied to that folder and cascaded to its children so that it appears on every article.

However, if you navigate to an article which returns a 404 you get the 404 page with the same paint layout applied, so the 404 has a font size selector, 'email this to a friend' amongst other things. At best this looks messy and poor, at worst breaks the layout of the page.

So clearly I want the benefit of the paint layout on the normal articles, but don't want it to affect the 404 page when that is returned.

404 pages can be set in Details section of Your Site (Special Page Links > Not Found).

You can set any page there, so there should be no problem in setting there Standard Page without Paint Layout, or even with different Design.

Thanks for the reply.

The 404 page is set on the details screen of the site. There is no paint layout applied to the 404 page itself, it's applied to the article in my example which, as it's not found, is being replaced by the default site 404 page. But since that article has a paint layout applied it automatically applies it to the 404 page.

You can see what I mean by creating a folder, applying a paint layout to it which itself contains some content, create a page within this folder and navigate to it - should show up fine. Change the URL to something slighty different which will return 404 (still in that same directory) and it'll return the 404 but with the paint layout applied to it.

Herein lies the problem.

What version are you on? We don't have this problem on 3.24.3.

I'm on 4.0.0, but it's a problem we had on 3.18.9 also. It seems very basic so I imagine I've set somethnig up incorrectly along the way.
