Adding an RSS data source - Matrix can't open the feed

Hi,

As well as using Matrix for our website along with other UK National Parks, we are also running Matrix 4.10.1 on an internal server, set up as per the instructions at http://matrix.squizsuite.net/quick-start-guide - I am currently developing our intranet using it.

Today I have attempted to add an external RSS feed as a data source, but for some reason, Matrix doesn't like it, and is throwing up errors such as:

MySource Warning Error occured during opening the file http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/pressoffice/press-latestnews/news-rss

and

Could not load children: error ocured during opening the file http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/pressoffice/press-latestnews/news-rss   File: [SYSTEM_ROOT]/fudge/rss_feeds/rss_feed_reader.inc   Line: 171

The RSS feed works fine in a web browser, and colleagues from other organisations have used the RSS feed as a data source in their instances of Matrix without error. (The RSS feed is at http://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/pressoffice/press-latestnews/news-rss)

Our IT team have looked at the firewall settings and they can see nothing in our IT set up that is stopping the RSS feed from being read.

So, that leads me to think that there is a setting in our instance of Matrix or on the Virtual Machine server on which it sits that is preventing traffic in and/or out.

Please can you help? I have little clue as to what else to try!

Many thanks

Can you ping an outside site such as www.google.com from the server?

I'm afraid I've no idea, nor have I any idea how to do that - I don't have access to the server itself!

Who hosts the server? You need to have your IT team let you know if that server even can see the outside world. You mentioned internal server, so it makes me think it doesn't.

Yes - I will ask them to log in and try a ping. I think you are right, that it doesn't talk to the outside world.

This is the first Linux server they have ever run, so could I trouble you for the command line commands necessary to do a ping please? If I go with instructions they will feel much happier and might actually do it then!

It's ok, Google has told me how to ping! Now I've just got to persuade IT to do it!

Thanks,

Stu

Lets hope they can figure it out if they are IT people. :) But, here you go:

ping www.google.com

I can't comment any further, Nic, but sometimes (just sometimes, mind), I really wonder! It is sometimes a case of the tail wagging the donkey!

Anyhow, they have done a ping and it comes back with network is unreachable for anything external.

So, all they've got to figure out now is how to open the firewall on the Matrix server, or make the network reachable!

Cheers

Stu

Yay! IT have sorted it :-)

Thanks for your help, Nic.

Happy to help!
