Asset Listing Question

G'day fellow Squizers,

I'm contracted to create a new site on an already existing MySource Matrix Squiz system. Done the design, created the pages and it works great. However, we have an interesting problem that I am unable to solve. Hence this post.

We have an asset listing on an already existing site and it works like a charm on the existing site. What we want to do is clone the asset listing to the new site and have the url look like it's been accessed from the new site along with the new design template.

Cloning the asset listing is easy but telling the system that I want the new listing to use the new design only when being accessed from the new site is proving difficult as well as trying to get the asset listing so that the urls look like the content is being accessed from the same site and not from the old site.

How do I go about doing this? Any help will be much appreciated.

Regards,

Leigh

If you clone an asset, you are making a copy. If you place it into a new site, it will get new URLs and new designs and have nothing to do with the old asset listing. Why would your new asset listing still have old URLs and designs? Have you left it in the old site?

Hi Greg,

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I do not have the intimate technical understanding of Squiz to answer your question, "Why would your new asset listing still have old URLs and designs?", so I pose this question back to you, Why would my new asset listing still have old URLs and designs?

"Have you left it in the old site?" - I'm assuming that "it" means the new asset listing that I have created? To paraphrase: Have I created a new asset listing and left it in the old site by accident? I have not.

Suppose I can describe the current situation a little better...

I have two sites, both on the same domain. The old site is located at... say.... http://www.company.com/ and the new site that is currently in development is located at http://www.company.com/.

The asset listing on the old site is located at http://www.company.com/ - think of it like a table of contents in a reference book that has chapters and sections.

The new asset listing has been cloned to http://www.company.com/ and it can list the assets quite fine except that the links are linking incorrectly. For example: http://www.company.com/ when I would really REALLY want it to be http://www.company.com/.

I want the asset listing to link to the new desired url (http://www.company.com/newSite/toc/chapter1/) as well as apply the new design template and not use the old design template that is being applied to the old site at http://www.company.com/?

Any pointers on how to achieve this?

I understand you now.

Can you go to the Web Paths screen of the "chapter 1" asset and see if it is a /toc and a /newSite/toc URL or just one.

There is just the one. No web paths that have /newSite/toc in the URL.

Where do we go from here?

What you need to do is link that asset listing under the /newSite site. Don't move it, just link it. The asset listing will then have two URLs. When you've done that, see what the URLs appear like on the frontend.

Excellent. I've done that and it worked. Now I'm having trouble assigning a Design to the new URL. Your assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What sort of trouble? Have you tried applying the design on the Settings screen of the asset listing?

The trouble I am having is that after I correctly linked the asset, the new url (http://www.company.com/newSite/toc/chapter1/) displays the page in the old Design that is being used on the old site (http://www.company.com/toc/chapter1/) and not the new Design being used on the new site (http://www.company.com/newSite/). The contents of the page is also missing on the new urls (http://www.company.com/newSite/toc/chapter1/) but still exists in the old urls (http://www.company.com/toc/chapter1/).

… opps… and Yes, I have the new Design applied to the asset listing and I even re-applied the design.

Looks like you have issues with both the design and paint layouts. It's hard to tell where without looking at the system and getting a bit more familiar with your TOC system. If you are a client, contact Squiz Support so someone can take a look.

Ok, I have the paint layout problem solved and the content is displaying in the new URLs. The only thing I'm unable to resolve as yet is how do I tell the system that if the content is being displayed on the new url (http://www.company.com/newSite/toc/chapter1/) to use the new Design but on the old url (http://www.company.com/toc/chapter1/) to use the old Design? I've been trying to work out how, but have been unsuccessful to do so.

I can change the design over, but it makes a universal change, ie. Changes both urls instead of the one.

You cant set different designs on different URLs. You need to set the design higher (like the site asset) and let it cascade down to the listing. Then, each URL of the listing will have a different URL.

What this means it that you are going to have to link your toc and all your chapters under the NewSite location as well, so they get both URLs and inherit the correct design based on their location in the tree.
