I want to create an A to Z listing of documents or pages based on their name. I am currently able to display the names but would like to have the Group letter as a heading above each group. For example Letter A as heading for all assets with a name beginning with that letter. (I have seen an example at : http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.a )
I know I can do this by creating A to Z folders for the assets and then exposing the folder names using the %group_name% keyword. However I prefer to be able to store the assets in one single folder.
Set your list format to "A-Z" in the "List Formatting" section on the Details screen of the Asset Listing.

If you do, ensure you have a %page_index% keyword on your Page Contents bodycopy. This will allow you to switch from letter to letter.

Thanks Avi, I presume you mean %page_list% which gives A - Z links to each page?
This is not quite what we are after, if you look at this page ( http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/aboutus/a-z ), you will see the the whole A-Z list is on the one page. When using the A-Z listng in Matrix, it seperates each alpha group into its own page. How can Matrix build an A-Z list all on the one page, preferably with headings (ie: A B C D etc) above each group and an A-Z link list accross the top that jumps to anchor points within the page?

As far as I know, that page on DPI’s website is actually managed manually and not gerenated by Matrix. The only way to create an single A-Z page now is to have a folder for each letter and use the Custom Grouping system to do it.
It has been a feature that’s been mentioned before, but I don’t think a client has ever wanted it enough to fund it hint, hint. 
Or you can have a metadata field on each asset which contains the first letter, then group by metadata in an asset listing. There's nothing that will automatically pull the first letter out and let you operate on it.
