Assets with multiple URLs and multiple designs

We have a number of assets that have multiple URL's (webpaths) associated with them. Each linked 'instance' of the asset has its own design associated with it.

For arguments sake, asset #4347 may have two different webpaths associated with it - one for external access to the page (http://rgdirections.lands.nsw.gov.au/), and one with a private webpath (http://rgdirectionsstaff.lands.nsw) - each with a different design.

When you view the asset using the private URL, some restricted content is also displayed.

The above works well privided the links are created on assets within the above mentioned sites.

However, a problem arises when we try to create a link to asset #4347 from another site (http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au). Basically, it seems that when the resultant content is delivered to the browser, all links are formed with the private URL, not the public URL. I additionally notice that if I were to preview asset #4347, the default webpath is the private URL.

Is there anyway that I can force the links created to resolve to the public webpath, other than hard-coding it.

We are currently using MySource Matrix 3.10.4

If Matrix can't determine which URL is closest, I believe it uses the shortest. Matrix is not currently aware of "Private" vs. "Public" URLs (i.e. it assumes that all URLs are available to all users). So, in this case, because the target asset's URL is not within the source asset's site, it picks the target asset's shortest URL.

You might need to request custom development for this.

We experienced a simliar problem when we created asset builders. when redirecting to the content after they have been built, it would pick the first URL that was available for this. In our case, the media folder has many urls applied for all sites.

It would be good to maybe someway map a keyword to a site name which is ‘exposed’ in builders, simple edit etc so you can specifiy the URL to which you want to asset displayed with.

As an admin of matrix we know that all mapped webpaths leed to the same content, but the people publishing the content will easily get confused if they suddenly see their published binary file, with a URL of another site…
