Bulkmail user delete - case sensitive issue

Hi

I use bulkmail and after completing a bulkmail job there is, of course, the bounced emails that require attention. I usually copy the email addresses into a csv file and use the Delete Bulkmail Users tool. However, the addresses I get bounced back are all lowercase and that is how I copy them into the spreadsheet but not all of the addresses are deleted in Matrix.

Issue: joe.blow@gmail.com is not recognised in Matrix if it has been entered as Joe.Blow@gmail.com

Query: is there a way to get Matrix to accept that it can be in upper and/or lower case and delete the user regardless?

Thanks

Hello,

I've been advised that Matrix Bulkmail Manager will no longer be developed because Squiz Campaign Manager is now offered as a replacement with more functions. As I cannot justify the additional expense of replacing Bulkmail Manager with a subscription to Campaign Manager just yet, we have the same problem trying to manually remove our soft bounces.

The other big problem with Bulkmail Manager - it does not report 'hard' bounces (i.e. where the domain does not exist e.g. 'joe.blow@gggggmail.com'). So unless you validate your list occasionally (any suggestions how to do this?) you could be sending junk into the ether and not know about it.

Also, your observation explains why we acquire different case variations of the same email address on our lists. Worse, we receive complaints from people who say they have unsubscribed many times but still keep receiving the bulkmail. i.e. If someone uses the newsletter management page to sign up 'Joe.Blow@gmail.com', but later uses the newsletter management page to unsubscribe 'joe.blow@gmail.com', they will remain on the list and get rather cross.

To prepare a Bulkmail delete list with a better chance of success, would it help to create an A-Z lookup of emails on the list that preserves their case? You could sort the asset map (but this puts any beginning with upper case to the top). Alternatively, extract the subscribe list using an asset listing [%asset_attribute_email%], paste into Word where you can sort and search the list containing all the case variations.

Hope this helps! (or are we working too hard at this?) :wink:

Hey Mary,

How big is the DB you're referring to?

You could always do the manual export with the capitalisation added on the keyword modifier. It all depends on how much DB maintenance and send schedule you are doing. If it's a large list with multiple sends invest in moving away from Bulkmail onto another service which does this for you. If it's a smaller list with less schedules then you could easily do this manually without having to get a subscription.

Pity about the whole:

Thanks Mary and Duncan

Appreciate your input and advice.

I've never been all that happy with the Bulkmail system anyway as I found it problematic in numerous areas and now that it appears it isn't to be developed further, I feel it may just be the time to look at something else then. Thanks for the heads up on that Mary. With us undertaking a full site redevelopment we will take the opportunity to move away from it I feel.

Thanks again.

Tina

There are a number of really good systems which let you do asynchronous db management - which work really well with Nic's JS Api. At the risk of putting too many eggs in one basket, yake a look at the system and prices of Squiz Suite extension when it's available, I've seen it, from what I understand it uses a 3rd party e-mail system API so you will get a good service and the benefit of integration with MySource Matrix at some level.

I don't know who told you that but it is incorrect. We don't have any planned development for the Bulkmail module right now, but there is certainly no freeze on its development.

Awesome, I think the bulkmail system could be really fantastic with a few tweaks that make it more useful for a standard 'email marketer'. It's good to hear this.

Thanks Greg. Good to know.

Our solution to this problem is to use a bit of jQuery to force all email addresses into lowercase as soon as they click away from the field.
while not ideal it solves the case sensitive problem but annoys those people who insist on capitalising their names.

where #bulkmail_user_0_XXXX is the id of the email address input field created by %details-F_email%

    $('#bulkmail_user_0_XXXX').blur(function() {
       var emailAdd = $('#bulkmail_user_0_3444').val().toLowerCase();
       $('#bulkmail_user_0_XXXX').val(emailAdd);
    });
