I yesterday implemented comments on my site and was excited to see that there were three created overnight.
Then I saw that they all spam.
These are on 3 pages among about 50 that can accept comments.
Has someone bothered to fill in the comment form or could they have been filled in by a robot trawler?
Thanks.
They may have been filled in by a bot. You can't really tell.
Are you using the CAPTCHA image on your comment form? If not, try sticking that on and it should stop the bots.

Yes, they would have been filled out by a bot. Are you using CAPTCHA on your asset builder?
BEATED BY GREG AGAIN!
Firtst I'd heard about CAPTCHA. But disappoiinted again … in another coversation is see that "Captcha for Asset Builders was introduced in version 3.18x, so, if you require Captcha for your Asset Builders, you would need to look into upgrading.)"
Another call to my sysadmin (sigh)
(non-Matrix musing) It's interesting to see which sites get comment spam and which don't. We have had several asset builders (without captcha, at the moment at least) online for more than half a year and have only had one spam entry the whole time (and I'm pretty sure that was a real person and not a bot).
You're lucky Rachel, we're absolutely nailed by bots every day. On all of our sites. Goes right through captcha too in some cases.
I developed some CAPTCHA enhancements which I hope will greatly increase the security of the CAPTCHA image so that they are even harder to get past by bots. It includes things like user selectable fonts, size, color, space between characteres, random angles and arcs across the CAPTCHA image. I submitted the code to the bug tracker, so I hope that it will get put into Matrix soon. :) The color options for CAPTCHA has already been added to Matrix though, and will be out in the next release.

Nic, you amaze me. It's official.
Just a small caveat thou, some bot programs (and some research projects) have had success 'reading' the CAPTCHA image when the image is more readable, even some are capable of removing background clutter and noise.
Oh, I know that it won't be perfect. I could add even more security, such as horz and vert lines, background image, etc, but for now I didn't want to add so many features.
Interesting that of all the pages that have comments applied, only a handful get spammed. And I'm getting about 15 a day from about 8 pages of 50+.
There doesn't seem to be any consistency of content on those pages compared to the whole set.
