We have a right hand side navigation "sidebar" on our website with many different versions for different sections.
If I add a new event to a particular root folder in the site it automatically defaults to the homepage sidebar and the custom sidebar designed for that root folder has to be added manually in the metadata each time.
Is there a way of assigning a particulat default sidebar to a root folder rather than having to remember to update it everytime we add a new event/page?

Can you explain how you built this sidebar? Is this a nested asset listing looking at that root node?

If you're setting it in metadata, why not make sure the metadata schema you have applied to the folder has the correct sidebar set as the default value?

If I correct the metadata schema to the folder will it cascade down over the exisitng events?
Changed the settings page in the root folder and this cascaded through automatically so sorted now, thanks.
Rather than just default values in Metadata Schemas, I would suggest to use the "Cascade Metadata Value" feature

As far as I know I've cascaded it at the root folder and it changes the sidebar on the existing pages, but everytime I add a new event or news item it doesn't use this cascaded feature.

Yes, it won't cascade automatically. So you are using metadata to determine where the assets are shown? Why not use folders?
I have added these assets to root folders but they're not cascading everytime I add a new "child" - should they?

Are you talking about should a metadata value cascade? No, it won't. Not unless you set it as the default for that field, but that isn't really cascading.
