Hey guys (and girls if there are any around!)
First, I couldn’t start my first thread without without lifting two big fat thumbs up to you guys; the MySource CMS is one among the impressive one! Plus it’s LAMP; now I’m litterally falling in love again! (though, it’s postgres based and not mysql at the moment - I guess I could live with that until mysql v5.0 is stable!)
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been evaluating various corporate class CMS, both open and close source ones. No need to mention that MySouce is in my Global Top 5 and in my Top 3 for open souce apps!
However, after reading through most of your documentation I must admit there is still a gap to be filled (or am I too hungry for details!?). This concerns the Module Development. If I recommend that we use MySource, my company will have to add custom modules, which we would be more than happy to add to the project as a contribution.
So my first question is pretty straight forward, where can I get more information on Module Development, information about the MySource Core. Should I suppose we’ll have to dig through all the code before we can get started?!
My second question (which is more of a recommendation) goes like this. Would there be anyways I could be provided with a demo or template website/intranet? I’ve seen the My Company Intranet and My Company Website in the docs, but I feel like I can’t get my hands on the edition part without starting completely from scratch. Please, correct me if I’m wrong!
So anyways, again, congratulations for the beautiful job you’ve been doing. I’m very glad this is another quality software from Australia!
Cheers mates,
Seb

This might a link that you may want to keep an eye on in the near future. It’s a work-in-progress, but should provide some insight into coding for Matrix:
http://wiki.matrix.squiz.ne
I might have to leave your other questions for more experienced Squiz members.
To be honest, you are pretty much on your own. All the developers read these forums and are happy to help answer any questions you have, but there is no documentation you can take a look at to really get you started.
We already see this as a big problem and have tried to work towards detailed technical documentation, but we have other projects on as well. The docs will come, but there will probably be nothing solid released until late in the year.
[color=“navy”]Great! Thanks for the info, both of you! The wiki is indeed a nice place to start with!
I’ll have someone to dig into the core sometime next week to see how long it could take for us to implement our own requirements.
But seriously guys, that’s a very impressive piece of software you got there! I know I said that already, but just in case you forgot!!
I’ll keep you updated about what we find - who knows, we might build some Developer Startup Guide!!
Cheers!

[color=“navy”]Hey Greg, hey Anthony, it’s me again!
All right, so… I’ve been playing arount with quite a few CMS in the past weeks and I’m not down to two, and mySource Matrix is one of them. I’m about to get my final recommendation done and before I make my own minds, I’d have few questions for you two (or anyone else actually!)
First… few notes;
We a looking into migrating an existing web application with approx. 5000 pages of content. We do have heaps of requirements in terms of data workflow, accessibility and management and are aware that we will have to code lots of them. Our goal is to start off with a solid architecture/platform and add our own customized modules to it. so I cannot stress enough on how important modularity and expandability is!!
Now… few concerns;
- the CMS module: how much?
- again, CMS module: anyway to see a demo version, or get a login to an existing site? (I won't change anything, I promise!)
- Search module: how much?
- I'm in St Leonards, Sydney. I guess you guys are selling consulting services. Now if I'd like to meet with a developer, in order to get a basic understanding of how modules are implemented and the overall structure of the application, whould that be something possible? costs?
MySource Matrix has very few downsides, however, no matter how nice/strong/powerful/extandable the asset based architecture is, the vast majority of today's web based applications use layered architecture and thus I fear we will have troubles getting developers to quickly pick it up and get coding…
Any thoughts appreciated!
Have a great Friday guys,
Cheers,
S.

[color=“navy”]Great… I’ll send your Sales Dept. an email later today. I believe there are no definite price on the website, right? so how the heck did I get a 14K$ for the CMS module in my head?!! :rolleyes:
Cheers!

These are some of the core features of matrix that make it so popular. Everything is asset based which promotes website expansion and re-use of content.

In many cases the functionality already exists in matrix for most web publishing tasks, either in the downloadable version or the commercial modules you can add on. If you don't want to re-invent the wheel and get custom stuff up and running quickly you might consider asking Squiz to develop it for you.
