Data Record Asset in use

I was recently pointed towards a Data Record Asset as the tool I need for a particular purpose, but I'm running into a few problems - hopefully there's a way around them.

I have created an asset listing of my data assets which displays just one or two of the metadata fields, but I want users to be able to click through to view the full display of the Data Record's metadata. The normal %asset_name_linked% is no use, because I can't give a Data Record a layout (can I?).

I started thinking this could be done using another asset listing which just displayed assets filtered by some kind of query string (like the asset id) so that it only displayed the clicked asset. All good in theory, but I can't work out how to do this. Maybe I should be looking at Paint Layouts - I dunno!

Would someone be kind enough to either: take me through the steps to achieve what I need, or offer an alternative.

Thanks again

update - seems I am talking through my hat here - I can apply a design to the Data Record and use something like "<MySource_AREA id_name="metadata_Staff" design_area="metadata"><MySource_SET name="metadata_field" value="Staff" /></MySource_AREA>" to display the metadata instead of the usual editable content of a design.

Does this sound like an OK approach?

You can do it with paint layouts as well. Just edit the default format bodycopy andput whatever you need to display in there. Not sure which would be better or faster but you can either use a current design and use paint layouts or have a specific design for those data records. Probably depends on which you think will take more work!
