IS there any way that you can assign child assets to Data Record Assets. I.e. Data Record, which I want to associate images and pdf documents and then display using a paint layout.
Or do I have to use a standard page asset? And if so is there any way to move metadata from one asset to another?

No you can't add child assets to a data record, and i don't think there would really be a reasonable way to map the record to the additional children. there's also no way to move metadata (without doing it by hand) from an asset to another, unless they were default values or something… unless you can come up with a query to do it
