EES breaking interface in IE8 on some but not all designs

Hi all,

I've got an issue with the Easy Edit Suite breaking badly in IE8 under some, but not all, of our designs. We are running 3.28.8. The EES is installed correctly and is working fine on several other designs on the same Squiz Matrix install.

I'm wondering if there are certain requirements in the site Design itself, before adding the EES to the top of the parse file, that might cause it to break in some designs but not others.

What I'm seeing is a squished up preview, and broken buttons for preview/edit and the logout dialog and asset finder. What's strange is that the EES works fine in the design on which the broken site was based. (To add insult to injury, I have screenshots but our proxy server is not allowing me to upload them!)

In all cases the EES and design both work fine in Firefox - but IE8 is our standard operating environment. Both site Designs are cross-browser compatible.

Short of trying to find a needle in a haystack, has anyone else seen this and can recommend where to look for what appears to be an IE box model problem?

Hi Miriam,

Try this plugin: http://forums.squizsuite.net/index.php?showtopic=7405&view=findpost&p=37996

We've integrated that plugin into the next release code (requires a matrix version upgrade, and not released quite yet).

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for that - I’ve had partial success with this script, the preview pane looks OK now but I still have broken buttons at the top of my EES, and the Exit / Logout / Cancel dialog floats to the top left of the screen when clicked. The EES itself, as before, floats all over the place.

Again, this doesnt happen in the original design on which this one was based, which seems really perculiar - the only difference is that the height of the header is just a little bit bigger. Nothing that should break the design.

If you want to PM me I can link you a screenshot on our server, but I can’t manage to upload them to the forum due to our proxy server.

Cheers

Miriam

This one sounds a little tricky to troubleshoot, if you have an existing support arrangement you could email all the details through to support@squiz.com.au and see if we can get someone to take a closer look at the problem. A screenshot would also be helpful, pity about your proxy. Feel free to PM me with the link, I'm hoping the screenshot might tell us something.

Is your IE 8 running in "IE 7 compatibility" mode by any chance? This has some known issues… well basically, I've never seen it work properly. You might be able to work around them by adding a compatibility metadata tag to the head of your design (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff966528(v=vs.85).aspx)

Hi Anthony,

Thanks again for your help. Yeah, I've already tried turning on and off compatibility mode - no joy. I'm also bound by delivering something that works with our standard operating environment, so I need to get it working with the settings everyone else is using - not all of our users would be familiar with changing compatibility modes.

We do have a service pack so I'll be contacting Squiz Support - I'd kinda hoped that this might be a common design issue, or that there might be some standards around the parse file for the site Deisgn that have to be maintained in order for the EES not to break box models (which is what appears to be happening). It's very inconsistent - I have 2 of our designs breaking, the one they were based on is not broken (!) and all of our other sites work fine. The only other time I've had the EES layout break in IE was when there was an IE box model problem with the parse file prior to adding the EES. I've also tried doctypes but that hasn't helped either!

cheers

Miriam

It's a common design issue, but fixing it is totally dependant on what the actual css is which would need to be looked at in context of the whole design. In my experience it usually comes down to adding that meta tag, some smart use of "overflow: hidden", and/or IE conditional tags.
