Having a database server. Is it nessissary?

I am in the process of testing out MySource Matrix for us in a large scale educational site. We have a few hundred pages, and get about 50,000 hits a month. Do you think that it would be a good idea to use a seperate database server? And how hard is this to set up, and different from the original setup?

Thanks for your help. Also, are there any liscensing issues with using Matrix for an education site?

We would recommend a DB server if your current hardware is failing under the load. I would recommend performing a load test once you have the site content up and running.

Setting up a DB server is no problem. You just need the DB software (PostgreSQL or Oracle) installed on the other server and tell Matrix how to connect to it. You don't need another copy of Matrix on that server.

There are usually no licencing issues with Matrix at all. You should speak to a Squiz Salesperson and make sure you’re getting as much functionality as you’re entitled to as an educational site. Some sites qualify for additional modules.

In what cases is it best to have a database server and a matrix install on seperate machines? Also, is having about 50 users considered overload, and would require a seperate server?

I talked to the Squiz staff, and unfortuanetly the free modules to educational institutions is for Australia only. We are still very interested in going with Matrix, but are worried about not having a support line to Squiz for the USA. Does Squiz provide email support? And is this support free if the premium/commercial modules are purchased?
