How do I create an asset listing within a design? I have created an asset listing named News Column and I want to output the contents within a design, how do I go about doing this? Thanks.

You need to use the nest_content design area. There are a few steps to it.
- Put a marker in your design indicating where you want the content to go. You do this using the nest_content design area.
Upload your new parse file, and Commit.
2. Now you need to create a customisation where you will define what asset goes in that spot. Go to the Customisations screen of the Design, lock it, tick the box, and Commit. Now you have a customisation. It sits under your design in the asset map.
3. Go to the details screen of the design customisation (you can click the link on the Customisations screen of the design). Lock the page, and you will see the asset_listing_test design area with the ability to customise it. Check the box and Commit.
4. Click the link to go to the Details screen of the asset_listing_test design area. Here you will find an asset finder box where you can select the asset that will be printed at that point in the design. Press the change button, select the asset listing, and Commit.
5. Now apply the customisation to your site rather than the main design.
I did that from memory, so let me know if you get stuck somewhere I have forgot about.
ok so I did all of that, worked perfectly except how do i add content to the asset link? I have the News Column asset but where and how do i add content.

Ok, I'm now officially confused. 
What content are you trying to add? The asset listing page automatically generates the content based on the list of assets – however, it only lists assets that are live, so until you set some assets live, you won't see them in the list.
so i need to add pages under the asset to be listed?
So i have the asset list added but I am confused on how they work, I mean where does the content coem from, pages under the asset? Do i need to create pages with designs and mysource tags? if you could give me a quick tut on how to create a column of news items from a file that i edit. Thanks.
Ok, Asset Listing 101:
The asset listing automatically generates output based on the configuration of the listing asset itself. You need to configure the Page Contents Bodycopy and add the keyword %asset_listing% in that bodycopy. This is where the list will print.
Then, you need to select a root node, i.e. from which asset you wish to start listing. You also have to select what type of assets to list (under “Current Asset Types”). The Default Format bodycopy specifies how each entry in the list will appear. You can also override the Default Format on an asset type basis by chosing the “customise” radio button in the list of asset types.
So: set a root node, chose whether to list only the direct children or all assets in the hierarchy (“Subs only”), configure the Page Contents Bodycopy and insert the %asset_listing% keyword, edit the Default Format bodycopy (the keywords available for each asset will be visible in a drop-down menu in the WYSIWYG editor) and make sure all the assets you are targetting are live. The asset listing should then generate a list of assets for you.

Ok here is waht I have done
I have added the asset list and added the mysource tags into my deisgn and did the customization. I added the asset types for pages and set my root node to a node of pages with sub assets of pages, all of which have content. No dice, whats wrong?

All are pages and the type defined is Page inhereted yet not content pops up! agh, I have triple checked all teh things that need to be in place, it should work according to the docs. Any ideas?

I'd just make sure you have the default format set up correctly with keywords, and that the pages you are listing are LIVE. It's a bit late, but if you send me login details, I'll check your system when I get the email. You can email me through the forums or send a private message.
