I need to provide a link on the Intranet that will start an application on the the clients computer. My research has revealed that this is not and easy thing to achieve and I have had no luck so far. I was wondering if anyone on this forum has come up with a solution.

Ignoring all the obvious issues like security, firewalls, file location and version, target operating system and middleware, plus a host of others that might bring such an idea undone, can't you just add a link and use the file:// prefix and point to the location? Works for documents on shared or local drives, probably works the same on executables? I haven't tried it, of course.
