Hey everyone,
I'm interested in installing mysource matrix on my windows xp laptop. Does anyone recommend (free) virtualization software for doing this. I downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 because that's the only one I've used before. I'm looking for simplicity here above all else!
Also I downloaded Fedora Core 3 coz the doco seemed to indicate this was one of the distros supported. Again, for simplicity is there another distro I should be trying?
I'm really keen to start playing with the CMS but I'm a bit daunted by the installation cause I'm not really a linux person.
much appreciated.
If it’s for evaluation purposes only, you can install MySource Matrix on Windows XP (although I believe some feature won’t work correctly, if at all).
You can fairly easily dual boot a Linux distro and Windows XP if you want to (there are plenty of guides around), but if you want to use virtualisation, have a look at the free VMWare Player. You will need to download one of the VMWare Player (the VMWare Player one is probably the most appropriate).

Hi Daniel. THanks for this.
It is just for evaluation purposes. If I were to use windows which LAMP bundle would you recommend? I know of one but it doesn’t have postgres. just mysql. And I would have thought most bundles these days come with PHP5 but according to your website matrix doesn’t work on php5???
I recently saw one of your guys do a presentation of the product. they were running it off a windows xp laptop. The performance seemed mostly fine and all the functionality seemed to work. WOuld that have been using virtualization or just a local windows install??
thanks.
Demos are done on a Windows XP laptop running VMWare, so Matrix would have been running on some Linux distro under virtualisation. And no, Matrix does not run under PHP5 or MySQL, so you'll have to find a PHP4/PostgreSQL setup.

Ah yes, sorry, the appliance I linked to had Postgres, but PHP5 rather than 4. This one might do the trick, although it doesn’t mention if it has PEAR or not (one would assume it does).
Note as well: if you use a Debian based distro (like Ubuntu, in the link above), the installation syntax changes slightly. Rather than chown apache:apache …, you will need to chown www-data:www-data. Also (from memory), I think you have to “su postgres”, before create your db and users etc. (but I may be wrong).
You mentioned Fedora Core 3 as a possible option to install matrix on, but I think by default it comes with older versions of postgres, php and pear that you would need to manually upgrade once you install it. I think Fedora Core 4 has the right base requirements for matrix out of the box, so you might not have to manually upgrade as much of the default application setup. Another option is Centos, or I have used Ubuntu without too much manual configuration.
Hi there,
Have you folks considered creating and sharing a VM Ware Appliance for Mysource Matrix? Other CMS vendors have done it (joomla for example) and it would overcome a significant barrier to evaluating this product.
I am trying to evaluate this product for work. I am part of a large organisation that is considering your product. I'm doing it at home cause time doesn't permit at work.
I'm not proficient in linux and as anticipated I'm having trouble with the installation. I've downloaded and installed the VMWARE Web Developer Appliance that Daniel recommended but from what I can tell it doesn't have PEAR. I also suspect it doesn't have the apache modules required. I get the feeling I'm not going to find an suitable appliance given the many specific requirements of the product. A VM Ware Mysource Matrix Appliance would overcome this.
Cheers

Yes, it's a great idea, and it's already in the pipeline thanks to this thread
That's brilliant. Great News. An appliance would be so helpful to me and no doubt many others. Its worth mentioning many months ago I wanted to evaluate My Source Matrix but was put-off by the technical requirements. I wonder how many others were too.
An appliance is an excellent way to simplify this and get your product out-there to a broader group of users.
I look forward to it. keep me posted.
sj.
Hi Daniel,
Just a follow up to your previous post. When you say a VMWare Appliance is "in the pipeline" should I expect one soon or is that a longer term objective that I shouldn't hold my breath for? Maybe the newly released VMWare Converter tool may simplify the process for you?
Sorry if I am sounding impatient.
Cheers
SJ
We're working on it at the moment, but I'm not sure when it will be released. I'm hoping sometime in June, though.
Don't suppose you're able to give an update on progress on the virtual appliance?
cheers

I have a VM, but its not complete yet. I need to work out how to get the VM to respond to changes to IP addresses and pass that onto the installation of MySource Matrix. I have made contact with a few appliance gurus, but their time has been quite limited until now. I've had to push the deadline to July, unfortunately.
In the meantime, I can probably send you the work-in-progress VMware Image and step you through any changes that may need to be made. Send me a PM with your email details and we'll go from there.
Hi, is there any further news on this subject ?
Cheers
Robin

Please contact me via PM for details about the VM.
Just a heads-up that I’ve had to put VM development on hold in preparation for the MySource Matrix International Users Conference. I’ll only have a new VM image ready sometime after that.
Hello,
there is some news about this?
Thanks
Not yet. We're still discussing various options for providing either a VMware image or LiveCD or something else completely.
Ok, thanks a lot Avi Miller ![]()
