Linking Standard Page Assets under the same domain

Hi Guys,

This must be the most stupidest quezzie. But I am just putting it out there to seek clarification to share with the peeps out there going linking happy.

Could you please confirm that you can't link the same Standard page asset with the same ID - numerous times - under the same domain.

example www.site.com.au/page-asset.htm and www.site.com.au/ace-folder/page-asset.htm

We are finding that users are wanting to utilise the same Standard Page assets under different urls under the same domain - however the CMS gets confused and then doesn't know which one to display.

Could you also confirm the quickest way of undoing this - is by unlinking through the linking screen.

many thanks o ace ones

Hi,

You should be able to link an asset (here standard page) multiple times under same site but under different folders under the site. So say if you have Folder_1 and Folder_2 under the site than the standard page can be linked under Site, Folder_1 and Folder_2.

Although under same asset you can have only one significant link (Type 1 or Type 2). So if you have standard page already linked under the Site asset you cant link it again under site with significant link.

Although you can create notice link under the site as many as you like with different link_values.

Links can be deleted on linking screen, dragging the asset to trash or hitting 'delete' on keyboard once the asset is highlighted. Ypu pick you choice

Hope this helps. Any questions or comments…fires 'em away.

You certainly can do this. Each time you link it, the page will get a different URL. Matrix wont get confused as to what page to show; it shows whatever page is linked there and applies the specific designs and paint layouts for the URl you are viewing. They are physically the same asset with the same content. Editing the content in one place edits in all places it is linked. This is one of the primary ways to reuse content in Matrix.

Thanks guys, I think the link type will do it =)

PS - love your stuff!

Thanks heaps =). The assets in questions are linked under different Standard page assets under the same site asset. I have changed the linking type to type_2 for the secondary assets. Though the problem is within page content - the link still doesn't know what to point to. Will a link value sort this out?

Sorry I am getting a bit confused here. Are you hoping the content of linked asset is available and can be seen on the asset it is linked under? So if Standard Page A is linked under Standard Page B, so when you preview Standard Page B you want the content of Standard Page A to be available too on the frontend? If this isn't the issue, then you might have to try and explain again

But if this is what you are after then linking them under the standard pages isn't the right option. You have to add a nested content Div asset to the standard page and then select the asset you want to use (e.g. Standard Page A).

Hi Ash =)

I know it is confusing. We have the same ID's linked under two different Standard page assets - under the same Site asset.

Within the content of another standard page asset we have a link to the asset id.

Since it has now been linked under two locations, I just want to be able to point the user to the correct location of this ID - either under - Standard page asset A or Standard page asset B.

Both these linked ID's are under the same site asset.

What you mean by point user at the correct location? The asset is linked at different location, but it is still the same asset :

Since you are saying "either under - Standard page asset A or Standard page asset B" it seems like you are not picky about what location you want the link to point to.

Is this how the structure is ?

Site

|- Standard Page A (#123)

| |-- (some linked asset (#222))

|

|- Standard Page B (#111)

| |-- (some linked asset (#222))

|

|- Standard Page C (#333) (has link to asset #222 in the content)

Yep that is pritty much it but we need to be able to differentiate on the link on "Standard Page C" to which Standard Page - B or A we want to point our link to. So I am just wondering can we use a linking value on the pages.

At the moment it is random and we don't want that.

I did try new Standard page assets and just nesting the page contents underneath the new assets.

Okie, I am getting a better picture of the issue I think. But adding link value won't do any good unfortunately. The link ,if you see, on Standard Page C is something like href="\?a=XXX" . This is replaced by Matrix when rendering the frontend content. This replacement of the URL is calculated by the Matrix based on the URL you are currently on and hence might be appearing to be random.

This might be some help: http://forums.squizsuite.net/index.php?showtopic=6989

Thanks Ash, thats exactly what I mean. And aha! Thanks Greg. In this case this is defo what is happening. One is shorter then the other - hence is faster. :o’ /> <img src=‘http://forums.squizsuite.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif’ class=‘bbc_emoticon’ alt='

ooo can I also confirm that removing a link through the linking screen to the trash - and then removing the asset to the trash - won't actually delete all instances of the ID.

Hey Fuzz

If you delete a linked asset only the link id will be moved to trash. It will come up on the linking screen as being in the trash for that specific link id. Purging the trash will not remove all linked instances of an asset only the link you deleted.

I always suggest (once familiar) with Matrix 'Linking' to use the Linking screen to handle adding and removing new links, that way you emmediatly know how the asset is used and in how many locations before you touch it and potential break something if linking has been overused. Be aware of any children it may have as well, when you delete a linked asset you are also deleting it's linked children from that location. The linking screens can help you trace linking back to original parents if you start at the bottom of a sub tree.

Optionally you could create a Shared Content folder and nest pages across the place to avoid any linking misuse or headaches.

Cheers

Scotty

oh wow it's Scotty himself =)

tee hee tee hee

Yep I always remove the correct parent link (starting from the bottom of the tree and double check)

I just always like to check! And double check and check some more.

My first option was a new page with new id - and just nest the shared content =)

…and as it comes down to the end of it we can't really draw straws with picking urls.

=)

Hi Guys,
Just in relation to this if we linked our standard pages:

  • under a seperate site asset
[*]or folder asset under the same domain

would this fix the front end url problem?

Or is it then specifically url based and it doesn't matter where the pages are linked.
