Matrix Search engine

I have a good understanding of how the search module works, and how to control the output it generates.

I want to know if there is anyway of getting better results from the engine itself?

Main issue is searching on names, we have pages and pages of names. (well lots of multi page PDFs)

If somebody searches on: "James Baker" with or without single or double quotes,

The search will reveal all pages that have both words James and Baker, which is a number in our case and not just the two pages which refer to James Baker convict 9068.

I would recommend adding a custom weighting in Search Manager to your "Asset Name" field. This will push assets that contain these words in the asset name higher up the list of search results.

To fix your specific problem, you can set the query field you’re using to be an “AND” search instead of an “OR” search – this will return a much smaller set of results.

More generally however, you might want to consider a 3rd party enterprise search solution. Squiz has recently acquired Funnelback, who offer such a product. Note that I’m completely biased towards Funnelback, so I can’t offer an impartial recommendation :slight_smile:

Daniel I did not explain myself clearly, each PDF have hundreds of names so the search on "James Baker" reveals pages with:
James Baker convict 9068;

James Smith convict … and Arthur Baker… as well as

Peter James … and Clarence Smith, baker from Claremont.

I am looking for a way to search for the exact term "James Baker"

I think the short answer is no, you can't do it. Exact phrase matching isn't in Matrix, unless something has changed…

Yep, it would seem you're out of luck on this one as far as Matrix goes. <shameless plug>If you want to me to setup a meeting with me and/or the other Funnelback guys, drop me a line – we'll be in WA in the next few weeks.</shameless plug>

Hey Dan, I would love you to set up a meeting with you. How about Friday:)
