Maximum number of assets under another asset?

Is there a limit, and what options are there for managing (say) 10,000 + assets in the asset map.

The assets get imported by script into the system, so they all get put in one place.

(I have thought about making sub folders on demand, but I'll see what the answer is first).

cheers,

Richard

The only hard limit is the size of the Tree ID (which is 4 hexadecimal characters by default). This gives you 65,535 children per parent. If you need more than that, you can increase the size of the Tree ID to include more characters, so a 5-char Tree ID is 1,048,575 children. Note that you can't change the Tree ID after installation without rebuilding the asset tree, which is something that Squiz should do.

From a management point of view, I find the Quick Search box the easiest way of finding assets, particularly if you know the Asset ID or URL, which are the quickest search methods.

Thanks. I put the asset ID in a comment in the HTML so I can get the asset ID if I need it. I might get the tree ID bumped during our next upgrade.

Did I see sorting in a changelog somewhere?

If you are planning this, make sure you test the upgrade a few times first. :)

There has been an Asset Sorting tool for a while now. Check the "Tools" menu. It is a manual process though. We have scoped an auto-sorting trigger action, but it hasn't been funded yet.

We've never increased the treeid and it is not a setting you should change without good reason as our test system always uses a treeid of 4 chars. I wouldn't recommend changing it.

Gulp! At the current rate of content, we are going to hit 65,000 assets with the next 12 months.

I might have to look at adding some code to our scripts to place assets in sub folder by year and month. When I say 'I' I mean one of the devs!

cheers

Yes, I would agree that adding year/month folders is a good idea.
