Memcache vs 'default' session handlers

Just wondering how many people on versions supporting memcache are using it, and what your experiences are. Is memcache now the recommend handler? Are the performance gains noticeable?

We are using it on a few sites with no issues now.



The performance gain come because the default PHP session handler blocks multiple requests at the same time. The effect of this on real world usage varies.
