The java test page doesn't load for me. But when i install V17, V17 works.
Actually i'm starting to think it's the problem for my installed plugins that conflicts with new Oracle Java.
I will try to remove all plugins and test again.
But Chrome is definitely not supported for new Oracle Java, due to 32bit/64bit problem.
Man, we are having real issues with Java and OSX. Along with the Mountain Lion java issues with WebKit that prevents me from using it, and now this, I hardly have a browser to use!
BTW, did this fix the webkit issue?
To be honest, providing an alternative to the Java based asset tree is getting overdue, especially with the increased use of tablets which don't support it and ever increasing Java security issues. We've certainly come across times where what users can do is limited by Java issues, even with Easy Edit - it still needs Java to select images, for example.

I think what you need is my upcoming iOS app, Squiz Matrix app. It will allow you to manage your Matrix instances on any iOS device.
It will be released this year!

Just updated Java on Mac today to latest version(Oracle's Java) and got into a nightmare.

Thanks for the warning Edison - I've been aware of a Java update I've been reluctant to download until checking the Squiz Forums.
Does the Java Tester page- http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp - work for you in your Firefox (v16 or 17?)?
With Chrome, I find the incessant changes where I have to give a plugin permission to run tiring. It's started appearing for Java as well as Flash in recent updates.
(Yes, I can tell Chrome to 'always run on this site' but that doesn't always seem to stick).
Finally it works for me now!!
The issue i found is isolated to my mac only. If I rename Firefox App, it loads Java fine.
But other than that, uninstall it, disable all plugins won't even fix the issue. (maybe some program is stuffing up my firefox path?)
So i think it's probably fine to upgrade to Oracle Java. If you have similar issue as me, try rename firefox.
Chrome is definitely lost on mac with Oracle Java 1.7, because of 32 bits versus 64 bits issue.
Yep, Java 7 works for me on FF. I'm still running Lion, but someone else in the office has it working on Mountain Lion as well.
Simple conclusion: Firefox hates Edison. Or Oracle does. Or Apple does. Someone doesn't like you.

Nope.
I use Android!
Also, I want something that will work from any web enabled device really, without needing any plugins - have been asked to look at things when away from the office, and not every machine I can jump on has Java installed or even available.
Reverting the to Apple Java 6 plugin seems to have worked in getting Chrome working again ( at least for me on Mountain Lion )

I couldn't agree with you more. I've used many CMS and I think Matrix is pretty good, but the Applet menu tree has been a very bad experience. I'm not intentionally badmouthing Squiz but it is something that prevents me from recommending the system to others when they ask.

No, the Webkit issues remain. Firefox is the only browser I can use. I haven't tried Opera but I'm not going to. The Java applet has always been clunky but it's even more-so in Firefox so I'm really hoping the Webkit fix will come soon.
As for Firefox for me, I get the "Your Java Runtime Environment version (1.7.0_09) is not a supported version…" dialog box.
However, if I just click "Cancel" it works normally.

If you upgrade to 4.6.4 or later, that message should go away:
