I've started following the Quick Start thread (http://forums.matrix.squiz.net/index.php?showtopic=9&st=0), and have got as far as half way through step 7. Right-clicking the page gave no Edit Contents option in the pop-up, only move and duplicate type options. Logging out failed, giving me a blank page, and now both front and back ends are blank - that is, they are evidently formatted with the parsefile.txt sample HTML, but have no content other than page title.
Anyone seen this and know how to proceed?
Thanks
Tom

That sounds like you have multiple assets selected in the asset map.
This guide is a little dated (6 years old now), although the basic concept is still the same. The basic parse file in the example would yield a blank looking page, however when you add _admin to the url you should be prompted to login (unless the backend suffix was changed in the system configuration). A screenshot, or url and content examples would help us troubleshoot it with you further.

If that guide is so dated, why is it pinned?
I have entirely blank pages both at the root of the site (to be expected, as I had added no content yet), but also at /_admin, which means I am unable to log in to rectify any problems. Viewing the source confirms the parsefile is being used both for / and for /_admin.
Site is internal at the moment, so I cannot give access to it. Screenshots of blank pages seems less than useful.
Any ideas? I might be starting from scratch again…
Thanks
Tom
OK, I've started again. Last time, I used the following info for installation:
http://matrixstuff.blogspot.com/2009/01/installing-mysource-matrix-on-ubuntu.html
However, problems with the Asset Map applet made me realize these instructions (which were also for Ubuntu, not Debian, though I don't imagine that matters much) had installed an older version. This time, I've followed:
http://www.solonode.com/articles/install-commands-for-mysource-matrix-on-debian
The installation seems to have worked. If the pinned Quick Start thread is out of date, where should I go to get me up and running now that the installation has completed?
Thanks
Tom

We have a searchable manuals site which will help you with specific sections of Matrix functionality. The pinned thread is dated, but the information appears to be accurate. The reason I think it's been there so long is that it still contains useful information, but it's information that was published well before our manuals site came into existence.
I'm like you when I go hunting for information, I always check the forum stickies. I'll have a chat with our forum administrator and see if we can review the content.
Yup, I'm working my way through the manuals site at the mo. A terrific resource to be sure. In the spirit of constructive criticism, I have two observations. Firstly, a lot of the instructions are written as continuous text in paragraphs, rather than broken down into numbered steps, which can make it quite tricky and tiring to follow. Secondly, am I right in guessing that the design was done on a Mac? The body typeface (Helvetica?)renders dreadfully on my PC, and combined with the constant (and I think misguided) italicization and colouring of Matrix concept words and phrases, this makes the manuals again pretty difficult to read.
As I say, though, it's brilliant to have such exhaustive information up there - it was a key reason for my wanting us to use Matrix over other CMSs.
Cheers
Tom

If you post these suggestions and observations in the Documentation forum, the doc team will see and respond to them. They might miss them here, so start a thread over in that section of the forums and it will make sure your feedback isn't lost.
