Hi, currently in our pages the pdf files are displayed in the menu as their file names, my question is how to change the link so the title in the back end is displayed
Are you using an asset listing to list the pdf files? You should be able to customize a Type Format for your pdf file, and then that will have the keyword you need in the keywords dropdown.
You should see the option in the keywords drop down. But I think it is %asset_name% or %asset_short_name% .

No the pdf file is added via the File…PDF File
So your saying that your pdf files are included in your navigation menus? Is this something that you want?
We have up to 6 different publications that have been migrated across to the MySource system and require the same format as is currently displayed. All publications have a link to the pdf file of that publication in the menu.
So, sounds like you are needing to edit your matrix menu code in your parse file. Have you tried using asset_short_name or asset_name ?
Just use something like:
/">
asset_short_name will print the title of a PDF file, like in the asset map. If you are using asset_name, you will get the filename.

still familiarising myself with MySource functionality, where is the parse file kept? Have used asset_short_name when building asset listings

asset_short_name would only be used in the parse file (which you find if you right click on your design asset and then edit, if you don't have one go to details and upload one) if you are wanting to have the pdf files displayed in an asset listing you would need to use the %asset_short_name% keyword.
If you don't have a parse file set up you should not even be able to preview your pages, are you able to?

possibly the link to the parse file has been removed as in time other staff(non IT) will have access to various assets for editing. All pages can be previewed
Let me know if any of the suggestions work. Or post a URL if you are able.
Excuse me if this has already been covered in a previous reply. But when you are doing the uploading are you giving the PDF file a name or are you just browsing to the file and uploading it? Because if you are just browsing the file and uploading it without providing a name in the title field, the uploaded PDF's title (Friendly name for the file) will default to the file name itself.
cheers.
If your design looks alright then chances are your parsefile hasn't been removed. ;) No parsefile means no instructions for Matrix to display your content!
While it's called a parsefile, it's not a 'file asset' you can go and edit - simply right click on your Design and select Edit Parse File.

by "right click on your Design and select Edit Parse File" do you mean the pdf file assest? because there is no option when right clicking, or the redirect page that the pdf fle asset is under either
have edited the parse file...and is now displaying the pdf file with the short name :P' /> ......but now all the names in the menu are using the short version <img src='http://forums.matrix.squiz.net/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<
That's generally how that should work.
The instruction in the parsefile tells Matrix how to display every asset in the menu.
What purposes are you using the long and short titles for?

currently the link displayed in the menu for the pages is user friendly eg. Keeping pest plants at bay…short name - plants. the link displayed for the pdf publication is abb-2007-23.pdf while the title is Complete PDF which I want to be displayed
Gotcha! Normally what I suggest to people is that the short name should be the one you plan to display in menus and the long name should be the one used for headings or the page title, and that they construct their parsefile accordingly (even if that means the 'short' name is actually longer than the 'long' name, as in your case).
If you have lots of pages I bet it would be a nuisance to have to rename all these! If you'd rather not you could try putting your parsefile back to how you had it. Then, use Redirect Assets with the appropriate name to point to the PDF file. Make the PDFs type 2 so that they are not displayed in the menu at all.
