Performance

I have an Asset listing that lists 20 documents per page. It uses three pieces of metadata to display in the listing for each pdf. There are a total of 90 documents in the listing. It takes nearly 15 seconds to display the first page and its the same for the next page(s).

I also have a listing page that uses two pieces of metadat in the listing with a total of 25 docs (20 to a page) and it takes just as long to display.

I was wondering if there are any tips to help to speed this up?

I know i haven't supplied much information but will supply an extra info you need to help me get this displaying quicker.

You need to enable the Cache Manager. The initial page load will be slow, but all subsequent requests will be fast.

The Cache Manager can help here. I have reduced a page load time from 30 seconds to less than one second using this.

There are disadvantages to turning this on too. You probably want it off while you are developing content and turned on once you go live.

Does anybody have any settings for the cache that work particularly well or does it just depend on your system?

You should tweak the cache settings to suit the nature of the site. You'll have to experiment with timeout values that make the most sense for your own installation.

Turn on all caching levels and leave the rest of the defaults.
You may want to chaneg the timeout to fit with your regular update schedule.

For example, if you are happy to have asset listings cached for a day, but standard pages can normally be cached for 2, you can configure this in the cache manager. It really depends on your update habits.

The admin seems to be unbearably slow. I have enabled Cache manager for all users no joy still.

Cache Manager only affects front-end performance. The Administration Interface is not cached, due to high amount of dynamic content.

I would be interested to know if this went any further.
I am experiencing a similar problem with search pages (10 - 15 second load times)

it is on a small site that will consist mostly of search pages to access the standard pages below.

The searchs are being done on Metadata and the results page is displaying 2 Metatadata fields.

I have tried the cache manager and it appears to make no real difference.

Do we have to switch on asset types in the "Cache Expiry screen" for it to function or is everything on by default?

The Cache Manager turns on caching for all assets by default. The first time a search is performed, there is no cache, so it will take longer. Once a search is performed, the results for each search term are cached to increase performance.

To ensure you're seeing the cached results, make sure you're logged out. Run a search using a keyword or two (or if its metadata-based, perhaps a drop-down box?) and then run the search again. The second time should be significantly faster than the first.

I will have to keep looking, my problem must be elsewhere as searches appear not to be improved by cache manager being on.
