RELATED LINKS
We are trying to replicate the navigation of this page:
http://www.salford.ac.uk/about/
The automatic/normal left navigation structure is fine but we don't know how to add the related links at the bottom of the navigation ("list of faculties and schools", "corporate information", "realising our vision").
Do we need to nest content in the design? Can we have related items for different pages? What's the best way of doing this?

You can have different related items for different pages.
I would probably make use of the related asset listing and the thesaurus terms. Pages can be tagged with terms, and a related asset listing can be nested into the page with a dynamic related node listing out items (redirect pages perhaps) that are tagged the same as the current page.
You could nest the related asset listing as a nested content design area beneath the menu using design customisations.
