Removing Folders from the URL

Hi All,

I hope this question hasn't been asked before.

My situation is this, I'm currently putting our site into Matrix & have quite a number of School/Subjects at our Institute, but would like an Easy way to organise the content so I might have all of the School/Subjects inside of folders but NOT have the name of the folder in the URL (e.g. cpit.ac.nz/nursing etc. rather than cpit.ac.nz/schools/nursing) without having to set up lots of remaps or using redirect pages.

The reason for this is I'm trying to keep the root folder from getting too cluttered up, & yet still prove short URLs (like cpit.ac.nz/welding) so that they can be used as landing pages in marketing campaigns etc.

Cheers J

You can use the Remap Manager to map "short" URLs to full Matrix URLs. If you're running v3.14 or higher, you'll see the remaps for each asset on the Web Paths screen. If you have a URL like "http://www.domain.com/school1/subject2/content", you can provide a Remap for "http://www.domain.com/subject-content" or anything you like, really.

In production, when someone tries the landing (short) URL, Matrix automatically redirects them to the full URL. This is seamless to the user and uses an HTTP 301 Permanent Redirect, so well-behaved browsers even fix their bookmarks. :)

There is also a trigger action available that automatically creates Short URLs for the firing asset in the format of "http://www.site-url.com/assetid", which might be useful.

Thanks Avi :) , but is there no way without using the Remap Manager??? Because it would be nice if there was a way to store pages in folders without it effecting the URL? It appears to me that the folders serve little purpose in Matrix other than to organise content for the backend users

Cheers Julian

I think this is the intended function of having folders in Matrix.

Correct, this is their exact purpose. :) It is also to provide structure to a site and by using Paint Layouts and Asset Listings, you can allow Matrix to automatically generate listings of folder content.

Our goal with the Asset Map is to show you your website hierarchy in a 1:1 map. So, it is highly unlikely that we would ever add the ability for you to create levels in the asset map that are not represented in the website. Consider that on a standard website, you cannot put HTML files into a folder without affecting their URL either.

This is why the Remap Manager was created, and this is one of its primary functions: To provide alternative or shorter URLs for assets that exist lower in the hierarchy.
