Hi,
our groaning old 3.12.2 is having trouble with RSS data sources - a feed which was working fine last week has vanished this week and I can't find a reason for it.
We have several feeds, but I'll focus on two - both coming from the same server and as far as I can see, identical in structure. This one works http://visions.unimelb.edu.au/episodes/rss and this one does not http://visions.unimelb.edu.au/episodes/rss
[*]Both are valid - according to the w3 feed validator - only missing a minor attribute
[*]When used as the URL for an RSS data source, one produces a listing of shadow assets, but the other does not (it was working last week, nothing has changed as far as we know)
[*]When I save the broken feed to a file and upload it to another server, Matrix correctly loads the shadow assets, even though this server isn't serving the xml with the right character set.
So, the feed seems OK. All other RSS tools I've thrown at it read it fine. Matrix read it fine until the weekend, but fails now. It seems something about the server is upsetting Matrix, but I can't find what, and I can't see why it would have changed, no-one has worked on either end.
There have been a few changes to the RSS Data Source to cope with issues like you a describing. I believe the most common cause was the feed being changed to use a stylesheet or the <?xml code being left out. Changes to the header values sent might also cause some problems.
I can tell you that the feed works fine on my 3.16 test system, so unless it is a connection issue, it is probably caused by one of the problems we have fixed since 3.12.
Greg, thanks for the info, but as you can see - the feed in question has no style sheet, has all it's right xml bits in place, validates, and is even being delivered in the right character set. It's technically identical to the sister feed, 'visions' which is working happily.
Can't think of any other reason why ours would choke on a feed [suddenly!] ?
Slightly OT - 3.12 could never use feedburner feeds (probably because of style sheets), so are you telling me that 3.16 has fixed this? (am hanging out for our upgrade!)
The only thing I can think of is some sort of connection problem. The headers look the same and if the content is the same then it shouldn't be the cause.
We are having pretty much the same problem that woowoowoo describes.
We have RSS data source assets and have set up asset listings to output the results. If we refresh an asset listing it sometimes shows the list of the data source record sets (i.e. the shadow assets), and sometimes doesn't. We can't fathom why - it seems pretty random… If we check the data source, when the listing isn't showing anything, it doesn't appear to have any shadow assets. If we refresh it in the asset tree it suddenly displays shadow assets. The RSS source is valid (putting it in a browser brings up XML output).
What might cause the data source asset to fail intermittently?
