Search flooded

We have a basic search setup on our site and works well, but there is a problem I've just noticed. If you do a normal search evrything is fine, but if you do a search where one of the criterias is name of our organisation it takes forever and then request times out. I think it is because it is used allot on a site and there are just too many hits. I can't black list the name (so it is excluded from indexing) for various reasons

Is there anything else I can do?

Have you tried restricting the number of search results per page?

It is restriced to 10 entries per page

Yes, you can blacklist a word. Go to the details screen of the Search Manager and enter it there. You will need to reindex your content for it to be removed from the search index.

He said he can't blacklist the words, but didn't specify why.

Something to remember is that metadata fields are indexed by default. If you use AGLS or similar, you probably have a lot of fields that contain very similar/identical content, usually involving the name of the site itself. I would recommend disabling indexing on all these fields and reindexing your site so that you reduce the size of your index (and the results).

Thanks Avi, where do I do that? We have other metadata schemas that need to be indexed, can I disable indexing only on AGLS?

You do this via the the Search Manager. Check the Search Manual for more information on this.

Stupid me!

I must be blind I am looking into admin manual and search package manual and I can't see how to stop metadata schema being indexed.

It's on the global weights screen. You want to customise metadata for all asset types. From there, you pick the schema and untick the "indexed" box.

There were some nice instructions in the conference Tips and Tricks doc, if you have one of those.

Thanks Greg I have made modifications, we will see if it helps

If you have changed metadata indexing settings, you need to regenerate your metadata to get the changes reindex (or, more specifically, removed from the index).
