… we cannot increase the cache time because of our publishing cycle requirements.

We configure our proxy server so that end users will have to fetch html page every time they visit our site and never cache html page.

From End user :

    Cache-Control : max-age=0, must-revalidate

Our squid ignore the cache control and keep the page until we purge them.
Matrix has a very good features of purging squid cache, and you can create trigger to automatically Purge squid cache when pages get updated.
This way, end user will see the updated page from squid cache as soon as the page get published.

Do you have a trigger per page ?

We have many asset listings, with lots of new content each day (and new listings), so you cannot always tell a trigger what specific page to clear when new (listed) content is added.

I dont generally deal with the matrix backend

I'm not to sure if this is per page trigger, but the trigger looks like this:

We used to have big asset listing but we modify matrix to run lightweight PHP/MySQL listings.

btw, hows the upgrade ? Did you get any speed improvement ?
