Trigger to Auto Create Thumbnail

I have a number of Asset Listing pages which display PDF's and Word Documents. I want to be able to include a thumbnail next to the description for the file type.

I have no troubles displaying thumbnails on the asset listing pages but my question is:

Is it possible to use Triggers to automatically create a thumbnail for PDF's and/or Word documents on creation of the PDF/Word Asset?

I already have the images required, and can manually create the thumbnails but would like the creation of the thumbnail to occur automatically when the user creates the asset in MSM.

Thanks

Yes, you can create a NOTICE link between the thumbnail and the new asset with the value 'thumbnail'.

You can also use type formats in the asset listing to display Word Docs and PDFs differently in the listing, allowing you to hard-code the thumbnail and change it per listing if desired.

Can someone give me an idiots guide to this as I want to associate a certain thumbnail with a folder full of files and then do a file list and print the filename and the icon on a page.

Thanks

If you are listing files in an asset listing, you can customise the type format of PDF and Word doc and insert something like

for PDF

    %asset_name% [%asset_file_size_readable%]

for Word doc

    %asset_name% [%asset_file_size_readable%]

and then style the "pdf_file" and "word_doc" in CSS. In this case, you do not have to introduce extra overheads (trigger, links and keyword replacement) since files will always use the same icon. It will also save you some time if you decide to update the icon in the future as you only have to update the CSS.

Edited to add:
Alternatively, as Greg has suggested, you can put something like
    %asset_attribute_title% [%asset_file_size_readable%]

where xxx is the asset id of the icon you would like to use.
