I have a paint layout on a parent node. I'm generally happy with children inheriting the layout, but I want to remove it from just one of the child assets.
Just wondering whether this is possible. do I need to create a blank paint layout to apply?

Yes, you are going to have to create a blank paint layout and apply it to the child, it is the only way to overwrite that cascade.
