I just want to know what the metadata schemas and why are they useful.
I read the manual but could not understood fully what are they used for

Metadata Schemas are used to describe underlying information about an asset. This information can either be displayed alongside the asset, searched, or hidden from public view.
Good examples might be a text field for an internal product code, or a selection list for a user's favourite colour. (Ok the last was a bad example, but that's what's possible)
A Metadata Design Area can be used to display fields which are selected for display on the frontend within <meta> tags at the top of your page assets.
That said, the relevant manual should provide more insight into the fields and practical uses of metadata.
One of our major uses for metadata is using a "description" field. Things like pdf files, movies, audio, and pages get descriptions. Then, we can pull up those descriptions later in an asset listing.

John,
Metadata allows you to provide more information about an asset than what the item allows in Matrix. For example, say you need to a particular type of asset, but you require more fields for your users to fill in. You can apply a schema with consistent fields to allow you to gain further information about that item and have the ability to display that also.
A good example is you have a photo. With a photo, you currently are able to obtain information about the size, when it was created, what type of camera was used etc. By applying a metadata schema you can add more information to that photo, for example, what the weather was like when you took that photo, where you took the photo, etc.
Metadata allows you to provide more information about that individual item and use that information any way you like. Sort or search only within those fields.
I've written some basic information about metadata for my office. If you like, I'm happy to email it to you, just PM me.

Adding to all this, I’d say read some of these about the Semantic Web:

&

I use it excessivly with our new intranet site to show related topics, content, upcoming dates etc.
