Which Linux Distro?

(Splinter7) #1

Hey Guys,

I am looking to install Matrix on a VPS with Slicehost. I have never installed it before and only have basic linux knowledge. I am wondering which distro would be the best for me to install Matrix on for ease of use:

* Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) LTS

* Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic)

* Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)

* Ubuntu 8.04.2 (Hardy) LTS

* Debian 5.0 (Lenny)

* Gentoo 10.1

* Centos 5.4

* Centos 5.5

* Fedora 12

* Fedora 13

* Arch 2010.05

* Red Hat EL 5.3

* Red Hat EL 5.4

Thanks guys, really appreciated!

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic) is great, or Centos

Thanks mate, I'll give Karmic a try.

I'm curious why you would recommend Karmic over Lucid (which will be supported until 2015) or Debian Lenny (which will be supported for many years to come)?

In a server environment surely longevity is a key factor?

Debian is fine, but Lucid currently cannot run Matrix since Matrix is not supported (currently) on PHP 5.3 which is the default on Lucid. With some hacking you can of course go back to a 5.2.x version but it is so much easier to use Karmic.

Obviously, from the Matrix requirements page, Squiz officially supports (and frequently tests) on Debian (Etch and Lenny), CentOS 5 and RHEL 5.
