Wish list

Here my wish list for the next Matrix (I haven't tried 3.3 yet so they may already be done).

  1. Ability to automatically sort assets alphabetically. Perhaps I could right click on an asset, select "sort" and it would sort the assets one level below it by A-Z or Z-A.

  2. Ability to resize the side navigation (i'm spoilt with a 1600 wide screen and it would be nice to be able to use more of it for the side navigation)

Neither of these two functions will be in the next stable Matrix release. Ability to resize will be in 3.5.0 beta and then in 3.6.0 stable.

Can you clarify what you mean for auto sorting. Would you like the assets to actually be sorted for you, or do you just want to see them sorted in the asset map for ease of use without actually changing the menu sorting?

I want the same two things, and in my case, I want the assets to actually be sorted for me.

In MySource I can quickly sort subpages alphabetically. I'd like to be able to do the same thing with assets in Matrix. The way I imagine it working is that I would click on an asset and in the pop-up menu would be something like Sort A-Z and Sort Z-A. It would then sort all of the assets immediately below it, but not the entire subtree.

Yes, please! Could you log a feature request for this? I really want it too.

Sorting by Date as well as by A-Z would also be very useful.

An asset search facility would also be a godsend.

What do you need to do that can't be done with the current searching?

I meant a search facility within Matrix to be able to find an asset. On our site we will have thousands of assets, a mixture of pages, PDFs & a lot of images. Typically an editor will know an image exists somewhere, but will not neccessarily know where it is located in the asset tree.

Part of the commercial Search package includes the Search Folder asset, which can be used to find any asset in the system, by name, attribute or indexed metadata field. The search asset creates a "virtual" folder in the Administration Interface, which contains the resulting assets as children.

It can also be used to display assets by status, to make an simple location to find all assets Under Construction (for example) or Awaiting Approval.

The asset map will eventually have a search feature. It is currently still in the planning stages for that - but you'll still need the commerical search module for keyword searching.

The development version currently has a search box in the top frame where you can enter an assetid or an asset's URL and go directly to that assets. This may help in some cases also.

The Custom Form asset is somewhat lacking in terms of options for formatting. I find that your options are to either accept the (let’s be honest) unattractive default formatting, or spend half an hour+ redesigning and formatting with use of the bodycopy feature. There should be a couple of simple but elegant pre-defined styles to choose from that allow users to quickly build more visually pleasing forms.

Great news, this will be very useful!

It would be even more useful if the 'path' to the asset could be shown too, so you could locate it in the asset hierarchy. When I was migrating alot of content recently I would have loved that capability.

Stuart: Check the Linking page for an asset. It shows you all of its current locations within the Matrix hierarcy.

Oh yeah…

Development is also planned to show you the path for assets in the asset map. You'll be able to click on some icon next to the name of an asset, see the paths, and select to expand the asset map to that location.

Still in planned development without a start date - but we'll be looking at end of Feb at the easliest. Should be in 3.5.0 beta or 3.5.1 at the latest.

Wish 1: The ability to add/remove Search Categories anywhere in the drop down list.
Why?: Because to add or remove a category means deleting every category below it and adding them back in. When you've got 30+ categories it takes a wee bit of time.

Wish 2: Having the ability to create an Order By list for searching.

Why?: The current sort by has set fields which aren't always applicable (e.g. asset type for our site users). The ability to add/remove sort by categories would be useful.

Wish 3: Option to have auto-population of metadata keywords.

Why? The indexing does a great job of generating keywords it would save time to have the Matrix pop these keywords into a keywords field and edit them as necessary.

Wish 4: Label tag on poll options on the front end.

Why? Better accessibility, and makes it easier for lazy people like me who don't want to move their mouse a few extra pixels to select a radio button.

Wish 5: Have the poll results and key as a list so that it can be styled through CSS.

Why? More flexibility for styling instead of having to have 1), 2), etc. Currently it's styled through inline styles which aren't editable.

I'd like to see information from a user asset automatically entered (but editible just in case) into custom forms. Hence, a logged in user shouldn't have to enter their name and email address into a form if they have already entered this information into the user asset.

I love wish lists: "You've got to have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you going to have a dream come true…"

I'd also like to be able to upload designs as zip files rather than tar balls. Perhaps it's just me, but I would have thought zip is a more wide-spread compression format than tar? At the moment, I have to get tar balls created for me each time because I don't have any tar format software. What do others think?
