%asset_sibling_next% work in Paint Layout?

Matrix Version: 5.4.3.1

I am using a Paint Layout to style the contents of a News Item. That News Item is in a folder with about 50 other news items. I am trying to use the %asset_sibling_next% keyword but it produces nothing.

Can these keywords not be used in Paint Layouts?
