Change the Field Type in Metadata Schema

We currently have a text field description in metadata schema applied to a sub-site, is there a way to easily change this field to WYSIWYG type? We have hundreds assets in this sub-site, and don't want to lose the current metadata values.

I've not found one. 

We've done it before - but had to create a new WYSIWYG MD field - copy the content across using a batch trigger - then change all of the other listing assets etc to use the new MD field.

It's a pain but it works (and probably safer in the long run than making an instant switch).

Yeah. There is no way to morph one field type into another.
