Counting install base - returning to last year conversation with Avi
Personally, I would very annoyed (as a consumer) if any software I used did this, so I'm certainly not going to support it in Matrix.

Started here in thread
While Avi and I were discussing moral aspects of pinging base from new installs to count them, ADOBE does not appear to be having any issues with it.

Not sure if you know a first public version of AIR went live a few days ago.

I installed it to look at it and one of the first applications written on it with extJS - Started here in thread.

Fig 1 Platform (AIR ver. 1) is constantly and silently trying to register a new install at base

My questions are:

  • do they think all users are so lame they they will not bother that software they installed is not going online while it shouldn't?
[*]don't they think that openly asking customers to go online only once to register a new installation (promising no other data will be passed) would be a better and more honest way of conducting business?
[*]do you have to become as big as ADOBE to start thinking this way?

I agree with first page defaults.

Fig 2 Ended leaving - no comments

Now you spent some (valuable for you) time explaining why you are leaving (in my case it is short as I just registered).

You also have BIG LONG button which says 'No Thanks…' and you press it while continue reading '…, keep my account' and you are back to where you started.

Guess what people will do when closing account second time after it all failed first time. Yes, you are right - no comments will be left.

If I could I would swap buttons on this page.

I will put first default (bold) - ‘Cancel account’ because I can not be here by mistake - it is a second and final page and I will put next to it ‘I changed my mind, please keep my account’.

Button with 'No thanks,…' looks confusing on account cancellation page - looks like it is to cancel account not for undo.

[*]It takes page reload to go from Fig 1 to Fig 2 - to show INPUT below country.
[*]No 'Back' button - if you selected country by mistake - you will need to close popup and start over.
[*]No drop down or suggest for 'City' - very easy to misspell when typing non English city name (but easy to choose if option provided)
Please enlighten me - Google Suggest

Fig 1 Any ideas?
Supposedly it's based on popularity, but not purely the number of searches conducted? google Google Suggest does not reveal much - but those suggestions may be to do with search trends? Or it may even be trying to 'offer suggestions that you will find novel or intriguing.'

Association

This reminds me very much a share market.

'Market' here is Google - it is changing (improves) ways it ranks without revealing know-how.

It looks for many that its operation is not completely random but nobody can formalise its behavior so far.

All others are 'traders' who are trying to build a 'winning strategy' - to be ranked #1 by plugging their 'keywords' into this huge black box and watching outcomes

I think the top 6 results have something to do with datetime.
Imagine a popular keyword that is not that trendy anymore ('retaining'), it is safe to assume people want to search for the 'current' popular keyword, and hence the suggestion order. Tweaking.

Rayn - Good and smart observation - appreciate it.

Another thing - guess.

If you logged in to Google Mail it will track your history and history of your web searches even though it is not part of Google Mail service and even despite "don't be evil" motto.

This is why I do not like Google Mail - if you will forget to logout explicitly they can/will associate you as a registered user with things you search and click through.

Applying this knowledge to my previous question - it could be that sort of Google Suggest is based on your previous search history too if you are looged in at a time you use Suggest service.

Speaking of Google

I noticed:

  • I never use Sponsored Links and generally never use advertising on internet to make a purchasing decision or to find a service provider. I use consolidators like shopping.com or EBay, I use sites which allow comparing products intelligent way and places where I can read reviews and look at rankings

  • I use Google itself as a not so important bookmarking tool - I remember search string I typed and position of a link on my screen and may be a few keywords.

I will bookmark properly something important but very often it is quicker to find site via Google as I know a key word which will bring it on first Google page rather that social_bokmark_site_out_it.

Even though it is not reliable bookmarking tool I found it more convenient that any available service available for me.

It is not reliable as nobody can garantee that link will appear again on the same page or I will still remember a key phrase to retrieve it. Also noticed that same phrase typed in Google at home and office definitely shows different results. I explained it to myself as different IP's could be pointed to different Google farms and all farms may have slightly different indexes which is understandable.

It effectively means that if I am not the only person who does it - many millions of Google hits are NOT searches (semantically) but bookmark retrievals.

Why not?
