Has anybody considered replacing the current editor in Matrix with fckEditor?
Its an open source project that appears to have reached a point of maturity. The functionality is far greater than the current editor, allowing you full GUI control over elements after that have been added. It is also compatible with a lot more browsers.
The main effort I can see would be writing a connector module to interface it to the asset map, and maybe in interfacing matrix users/groups/permissions to change the number of options available on the toolbars to each editor.

fckEditor
The WYSIWYG Editor is tightly integrated with Matrix, so the process of replacing it is very involved. We have not considered replacing the editor at this stage, though you are more than welcome to consider funding such a replacement.

I think the WYSIWYG is great but it does still use <b> instead of <strong> <i> instead of <em> and also <br> instead of <br /> to mention a few.
will this be updated?

The WYSIWYG might, but HTML Tidy fixes all of that when it processes the WYSIWYG content on submission. This is why it is essential to have HTML Tidy configured and working on your server.
[quote]I’ve used fckEditor for years and have found it to be pretty good.

I have only heard good things about fckEditor myself.

Take a look at the HTML of your rendered pages to see the change between what you see in the WYSIWYG editor and the resulting HTML Tidied code.
Avi,
what about version 4 of Matrix? Is it possible that the editor is replaced?
I've heard rumors about an open interface to plug-in (any) editor…
Its possible, but I don't think we've gotten that far in development yet.
I can tell you that version 4 will not use the current WYSIWYG editor. We haven't decided on a replacement for it.
One of the Matrix developers actually modified his system to allow for other WYSIWYG editors to be used, in fact it was configurable per user group. But, none of the additional Matrix specific plugins were written (insert link, image etc) and we didn't have anybody to fund the additional development time.
So it is possible in Matrix, but needs development work to integrate a new editor.
