Firefox issue with backend - blinking and black screen

(Drew Nixon) #1

Hi,

When updating some of our pages in the backend with Firefox the page starts flickering and the whole tab goes black (see attached, first image is mid-flicker, second is the inevitable black screen).

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue? It seems to generally be longer pages with more Divs.

Currently running:

Firefox 33.0.3 Java 7 update 71

Windows 7 Pro

Squiz Matrix v5.0.3.0

We tried updating Java but it didn't resolve the issue and also created issues with the other CMS we use.

Sorry for all the posts lately.

Hey Drew

We have had some FF rendering issues elsewhere with our products (FF33 bug) which we have been able to workaround by turning off the FF hardware acceleration feature.

Does this work? In Firefox: Go to Firefox Preferences -> Advanced -> General and then turn off the Use hardware acceleration when available option.

That's Mac specific, I assume similar for PC. If this works, then I believe that bug is fixed in the upcoming FF 34.

Cheers

Scotty

Hi Scotty,

Thanks for your extremely quick reply! Unfortunately just seems to have helped a little but I am still getting a black screen after a while.

Everything is working fine on Chrome I just prefer Firefox. Should I just stick it out until FF 34 has been released and see if that fixes it?

Regards,

Drew

Hey, did you restart the browser after disabling?

Also, try running it in safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Regarding FF34, you could test things out with their beta release as well to see if that helps: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/#beta

Hi Scott,

I restarted the browser but it seems to be persisting. I will try the browser in safe mode now.

Thanks, Drew

Hi,

Safe mode was actually worse. I will try the beta version although I need IT to install it as I don't have permissions to install applications on my work machine.

Thanks, Drew

Hi all,

Thanks for all the support, good to know we aren't the only ones experiencing this. I have updated to the beta version of 34 for now which seems to be working and hopefully means to the next version will have this fixed.

Once again thanks for all the help.

Regards,

Drew

Hi all, Firefox version 34 is now officially released and installing it resolved this issue for me.

Kind regards,
