Image Compression Tool a possibility?

Reviewing old emails I’m reading a thread from uweb on compressing homepage slides in 2014.

Badly compressed images or images that haven’t had any compression are a constant problem for us in webpagetest.org and other speed tests.

Is there any image compression tools that we could deploy alongside sites that people find useful? Alternatively, any technologies that could be integrated / built into Matrix?

Dunno if it’s any help but we use mod_pagespeed (with it turned off for matrix urls like admin / edit / nocache / recache etc etc)

Can be tweaked to compress images but also change image types from one to another

https://modpagespeed.com/doc/filter-image-optimize

…but not sure if this is the recommended way or not.

Thanks for the pointer to that modpagespeed.com page - we tried mod_pagespeed a few years ago and had some issues with it and with that and other demands on our time we didn’t deploy to any of our production systems.

I was thinking that if there’s a server side utility that people are finding useful, it could perhaps be bundled into future improvements on the 5.4 image editing (https://matrix.squiz.net/releases/5.4/5.4.0.0#image-editing).
