Reviewing what I can create with a custom form in Matrix for the first time … and I'm stymied by how I can create a simple checkbox as a question.
I can see I have options for a tickbox list or a tickbox table when creating a question - but I just want to create a single checkbox (tickbox), not a list, nor a table. Can I?
Matrix Custom Forms - Outputting a simple checkbox
Ok. If I do a custom design and layout which it looks like I need to (if only to avoid table based layout?), can I spit out the one item list as a simple checkbox?

Not exactly sure what you mean here.
Why are you needing to do a custom design and layout to avoid table based layout?

I've created a custom form asset, and in previewing it the output html is using tables for layout:

Have you made sure to select the "Use Bodycopy?" option for Page Contents? This will allow you to build the form with keywords. It just uses tables by default if you are not building it on your own.
For the tick box. No, Matrix is going to put it into a unordered list, shouldn't that markup be ok for you?

No - I don't think it makes for good semantic markup unless I specifically want the checkbox (or checkboxes) in a list.
