Matrix development environment

Does anyone have a model for working with a development environment for matrix? What I'm after is some guidance as to how to go about migrating new developments or changes to existing assets, into the production environment.


I should add that I'm not talking about little changes to standard pages - I'm really talking about major multi-asset implementations, like asset listings, which involve multiple dependencies, such as paint layouts, search assets, and javascript (jquery) code.
