Hi,
I’ve had a look around and couldn’t find anything, so it’s your turn
Is it possible to add links to assets in metadata. I may also be barking up the wrong tree, so I’ll explain my requirements (this was all set up before I arrived, so recomendations on any part of the process is much appreciated!).
We have a a huge library of Memos and Circulars that are filed with a number and a name. Each one has metadata to indicate whether it’s current or not, and some notes. Here’s an example of a listing:
2008 Ministerial Memoranda (Forgive the layout, as some of the older documents have the titles and numbers seperate, so that’s why they’re there twice. Part of this project is to get everything uniform)
I’m going to adding more metadata fields for updated contact info and so on, but one of the main requirements is creating links to the other memos mentioned in the notes (superceded and related). I know I can put links into metadata manually (either a hard link, or a ./?a=), however, that isn’t really the way to go for non tech staff. Every memo or circular short name is the same format, eg M2008-11 etc, if that helps at all?
This process got me thinking. One of the new metadata fields I’ll be adding is categories (to sort by category/subject, instead of year). Could I create another field, called related perhaps, that could tie various assets together and produce links to each other?
Again, the requirement would be that the short names of related assets be used when entering this info into the metadata, rather than an asset’s ID.
I think I’ve explained myself… Have at it
Thanks
Mark
Metadata cant be used to create relationships between assets. You need to do this by manually linking assets together. But with you're large number of documents, it's probably going to be hard to find the content using the asset map to link it.
It is possible you could use a combination of a Search Page and a Link Manager to get this working for your editors, but it would be pretty tricky to setup. If nobody else comes up with a simple way of doing this, it may be worth talking to Squiz about getting some implementation help.
Thanks Greg.
There's going to be one poor person here who is going to be going through all of them one at a time fixing formatting, bad or missing metadata, and adding new metadata, so once that's done I'd only have to worry about new assets.
I'll see if there are any other suggestions, but we need to get rolling on this pretty quick, so probably sooner than we could organise any dev work.
While this functionality would really help, it's not a deal breaker.

Maybe a Related Asset Listing might be the way to go…
