Nested asset listing of metadata inside paint layout

Is it possible to nest an asset listing within a paint layout and then format the listing into columns?

Yep. Have a look at https://matrix.squiz.net/manuals/asset-listing/chapters/column-layout-screen

But you can also have more control over it by just configuring the Type Format layout to print the columns markup.
