New link here inquiry

Hi All

In regards to the 'new link here' function, one of our clients has accidentally duplicated an entire site in another folder called B. What they want us to do is remove it from the B folder, as far as I can remember the new link here function basically is a shadow asset of the original site, so if I want to delete all of the files from the folder B which is a duplication will it corrupt or kill off the live active original site or not???

What can be the guarantee of this being a success? :frowning:

Cheers

"New link here" actually creates a new link that's equal in all ways to the original.

If the "second" link is moved to trash and trash is purged from the top level it will be fine.

Issues tend to occur when someone moves one of the lower children, because the child links are actually the exact same link in both locations, moving one will move both.

If you need further clarification I would suggest utilising Squiz Support.

Cheers,

Dave

Linking an asset can be confirmed by looking at the assets linking screen. If you see (2) TYPE 1/2 links then it means that it exists in more than one place in the asset map (they aren't shadow assets, they are just locations for the asset in the asset map) and can be removed without moving the whole asset into trash (assets will move into trash when their last link has been deleted).

This being said, there can tend to be some confusion over removing linked content, particularly with child assets of linked pages (DO NOT REMOVE these individually. If you delete them they will most likely go to trash).

When in doubt, look at the linking screen first. Take backups of the site regularly just in case someone does the wrong thing. Sometimes it may be easier to restore and lose work than undo potentially damaging changes.

I guess the key here is that the person who created the original link didn't anticipate these problems, but now we want to get rid of it simply because it's annoying having so many assets present in more than one location.

The whole parent/child thing is the scary bit, so I just want to work out if there is a sure fire way of knowing. Is it simply enough to see 'Asset A' in two locations, with different parents, to determine that this is the item that can be deleted safely?

I also wondered about the 'Delete Link' tool on the linking screen. Is this a 'safer' way of doing it, or is it exactly the same as moving to trash?

We're talking a LOT of child assets, which is why we're a little nervous about it all!
