Optimum setup for page not found?

Hi All,
I'd put off thinking about my "page not found" page for a while, but it's getting to the pointy end of the stick so here it is…

I've set mine up as follows. I cloned my search page, customised the text a little (page not found, try searching etc), then placed it in a public denied folder, but with public read permission on the new cloned search. I then set the site "page missing" page to be the cloned search.

Works quite well, with only one thing I dont like. I have a breadcrumb trail up the top, and the path for the breadcrumb shows up as:

home -> page not found -> search

Clicking on the page not found link, pulls up a "you must login" box (as you'd expect for a public denied folder). The only reason I've got the folder as public denied is so that it doesnt show up in my main nav bar.

So, I can live with my current setup, but I have a feeling it's not "the best" way to go about it. Anyone have a better way to:

  1. get a search page when the user enters an incorrect url
  2. That doesnt show up on your auto generated nav menu, nor in a breadcrumb

    I'm all ears :slight_smile:

    Cheers

    Dale

Just use your search page as the page not found (as you currently do), link it to the home page and set the link to a TYPE_2 (hide from frontend menus).

You're able to change the link type on the Linking screen of the search page.

Or, just TYPE_2 link the folder and make sure your lineage is configured to suppress TYPE_2 links, with the following:

<mysource_set name=“show_hidden_links” value=“false” />

In the <mysource_area> tags.

ahh excellent, that works a treat, I must have skipped over link types in the manual!

many thanks
