Several people have noted that the asset map does not work with version 1.4.2_04-b05 of the Java Virtual Machine on gecko based browsers (mozilla, firefox, etc) on Linux. The asset map fails to load when using this version of the JVM (and possibly other versions by Sun) on linux. A solution to this is to use the blackdown version of the JVM instead.
this version can be downloaded here:
ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/java-linux/JDK-1.4.2/
This is the version that we are currently using at Squiz.
Problems with JVM v.1.4.2_04-b05 on linux
I'm also having the same issue but with the Java™ 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_05-141.3) & Java HotSpot™ Client VM (build 1.4.2-38, mixed mode) on OS 10.3.5
The asset map doesn't load in any gecko based browser but does load in Safari
Just FYI
Hey guys,
Been a while. Back on this though.
Is there a list of minimum requirements for running the asset map anywhere? We're at the testing phase on-site at the moment (govt dept. things don't move very fast there ) and the asset map isn't loading. They're running Windows XP. I've managed to get them to install Firefox but when the AM was first hit they just followed through with the xpi plugin download. This has resulted in Java™ 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0 being installed. I'm assuming that this is the issue?
Which version of Java should be used for which browsers?
They've not managed to get the AM to load in IE yet either.
Yeah, 1.5 of java (what you've got installed) has some problems with the asset map, so you'll need to make sure it's 1.4.2 installed.
Suspected that might be the issue.
So, any 1.4.2 JVM under Windows should work OK? Stick with Sun? There doesn't seem to be a Blackdown JVM for Windows.
I'm only aware of the Sun JVM on Windows (after the Microsoft one got killed off) - I might be wrong on that though [I'm not really the Java expert on this]. Any 1.4.2 version of Sun JVM (including the latest, 1.4.2_06) should work on Windows.
I am running Windows XP and have just downlodaed Java Version 1.5.0 (build 1.5.0_04-b05). However the asset manager does not work anymore, and I do not know where I can get an older version of Java to use?
Any suggestions?
If you didn't uninstall Java 1.4 manually, you probably still have it installed. Go to the Java applet in Control Panel and see if you can select the Java version there.
Alternatively, you could upgrade to Matrix v3.4.3, which supports the v1.5 JVM.

Where can I download Matrix v3.4.3? It doesn't appear in the download section of the Matrix site!
Matrix 3.4.3 was not released on the web site. Matrix 3.4.4 will be released on the web site on Monday. You can upgrade to that.
on matrix version 3.4.4 what versions of java are supported for windows? one of our IT guys said the java applet isn't loading after logging in and that the user has version 1.4 installed. he is also wanting to know why 1.6 isn't supported. thanks, CJ.
edit i found out Matrix is not recognising that 1.4.2 is installed. any suggestions? browser is IE6. this happened after downgrading from 1.6. apparently they've removed all 1.6 entries. this happened as initially she had no java installed so matrix said go download the latest version… so they did, and then found out 1.6 had no support!
All current stable versions of Matrix support Java 1.6 and have done so since 3.12.5 (released in June). You will need to upgrade to get this support as the asset map was re-written to support the changes in this new version.
We've got Java 1.6 working with Matrix 3.14 however... we've got a few users that can't upgrade to Java 1.6 due to other applications that they use that require 1.42
Should Java 1.42 work with matrix 3.14?? The asset map isn't loading for these users. Could it be another issue?
Thanks,
Sarah
The asset map should still support versions 1.4.2 and higher of the JVM. Do you get any errors in the Java Console?
Not sure at this stage - unfortunately I only have administrator access to my machine, which I upgraded to Java 1.6, and not the staff who have this issue (which is very frustrating!)
I am wondering if it is a security/permissions issue - if the machine needs to load Matrix once whilst logged in as an administrator, to accept the alert that pops up from Sun, and then when the normal user logs in the asset map will load.
Will request this to be tested...
Needed to go into IE and select 'Use Java 1.4.2…' in the Advanced tab of Internet Options and restart.
Not sure why but it's working
