On the requirements page it states that, "Mysorcematrix should not be installed in htdocs", then how will matrix software manage a site if there's nothing in the htdocs direcory?

MySource Matrix is a dynamic CMS: It creates your website itself based on information within its own database. Matrix creates each page dynamically on request, so there are no pages within your htdocs location.
The reason you don’t install MySource Matrix into the htdocs location is to improve security: htdocs is usually visible to web viewers and you want to keep the code of Matrix protected from being browsed.
As part of the installation process you make some changes to the Apache configuration files that allows Matrix to present your site.

Hi Avi, Thanks for replying,
Would I need special permissions from my host?

Potentially. MySource Matrix is not usually shared hosting friendly – it can sometimes take a lot of effort to get it to work in those environments. Also, many shared hosts don’t provide access to PostgreSQL, which is required for MySource Matrix.
Hi,
just want to fill in a bit or byte
If you are using a shared host, it’s mostly like what Avi is saying. Quite often the hosts don't support PSQL and/or not have all the PHP/PEAR packages compiled into their shared setup. Actually you should be quite lucky if you find a host with the required setup.
I would recommend you to get at a minimum a VHOST, which is a virtual machine/installation of some Linux distribution. With this you will be able to install exactly whatever you want, as you almost run your "own" machine. But look out for to poor system environments, you need at least 512MB of ram to run Apache/PHP/PSQL and Matrix (my recommendation). You might even need more than that. As on a VHOST you most often pay for the RAM size.
The best would be to run your own physical server. The biggest difference from a VHOST is likely that you’ll get even more RAM and CPU.
And a comment to the “htdoc” question. It’s not required to put all the Matrix files in a directory not under htdocs. It’s just a question about security. You simply put the files in some other directory, and than either put aliases in your Apache setup file or you can create symbolic links from the required directories into the htdocs directory.

What's important is that you'r able to install the right components for PHP and the PostgreSQL database as required.
