Site assets index page showing on search engines by default

For a large majority of our site assets, their homepages, which usually sit at /home, seem to take precedence over the root url of the site asset on Search Engines - eg. Google

For example https://www.ulster.ac.uk/home is shown by google, and https://www.ulster.ac.uk is not shown.

Does anyone else have this issue and what is the best solution?

We tried to use canonical urls but Search Engines are not honouring them.

Are there any links to /home? First look at removing them and make them just go to the root domain. Your google analytics should be able to tell you that.

Other alternative is to redirect from /home to the root domain with a 301 redirect.

For any website owner, getting Google index my site is a top priority to improve discoverability. The process through Google Search Console was easier than expected, allowing me to monitor indexing status and optimize accordingly. I learned that Google favors well-structured sites with clear navigation and SEO-optimized content, which makes indexing faster and improves ranking. By regularly submitting my site’s updated pages, I ensure that Google picks up on fresh content and ranks it accordingly. It’s also rewarding to see how these actions bring more visitors organically. Indexing is definitely a must for anyone serious about building their online presence.
