Sort by Metadata date field using a search asset

Matrix Version: 5.5.4

Not sure whether I’m having a mild brain fade but where the hell do you sort by metadata date field using a search asset? Looking at the sort options I don’t have the same options like a Asset Listing. Has this never been the case? The sort by options says there are no types defined so where the hell does one define them?
